Emission-reduced Thermo plus diesel heater

In its latest fuel-burning Thermo plus heater Valeo has implemented an improved starting phase, optimized switching threshold adjustment and an optional new drop-stop nozzle. The bus heater thus achieves unrivalled low emissions and reduced fuel consumption. In addition to diesel buses this makes it interesting, in particular, for use in electrobuses, which due to their limited energy resources at low outside temperatures are reliant on an additional fuel-burning heater.

The pressure on mobility service providers to convert to local emission-free operation is greater than ever. However, the electric power supply to auxiliary consumers such as an electric heater represents a major challenge, because the energy resources are limited on account of the lower energy density of the batteries. Furthermore, there is no supply of usable waste heat from the motor. This calls for a highly efficient emission-reduced heating solution. Thanks to its newly-developed features, the Valeo Thermo plus emits extremely low exhaust gases in an electrobus (HC 0.01%, CO 0.04% and NOx 1.8% of the current EU6-emission limits).

How does the newly developed Thermo plus heater reduce fuel consumption and emissions?

Starting phase optimization

Emission levels and duration were substantially reduced through optimization during the starting phase. The Thermo plus thus achieves a reduction of up to 60% in hydrocarbon (HC) and up to 35% in carbon monoxide (CO) emissions compared to its predecessors the Thermo and Thermo S heaters.

Lowering of switching thresholds

A reduction in the upper and lower switching thresholds reduces the number of power-ups and thus fuel consumption by 30% in the course of a heating period. This results in less short combustion times and an increase in medium combustion times.

Use of the drop-stop nozzle (optional)

The use of a drop-stop nozzle in the Thermo plus reduces dripping following fuel injection and prevents smoke formation in the stopping and restarting phases. During these processes the exhaust emission values are thus significantly better than with the standard nozzle.
