On 6–7 March 2018 the VDV Academy conference “Electric Buses – Market of the Future!” took place for the ninth time at the Hotel ESTREL in Berlin. The ElekBu Trade Fair was also held parallel to the conference. For Valeo this was a good opportunity to deliver a technical paper on the subject of “Heating in the Electric Bus” and present its energy-efficient heating systems for electric buses.
The pressure exerted on mobility service providers to convert to local emission-free operation is greater than ever. Vehicles with pollution-free bus drive systems are currently being tested in several cities. However, the electric power supply to auxiliary equipment such as heaters still constitutes a huge challenge: energy resources are limited due to the low energy density of the batteries and insufficient supply of usable waste heat. This calls for a highly efficient heating solution that involves a holistic approach to components and the bus energy system. On the ‘Boulevard of Ideas’, which for the first time enabled exhibitors to present themselves with new technical concepts and components, Christian Schmidt (Head of Application Technology Valeo TBS) explained how energy-efficient heating can be achieved through the combined use of heating systems. A combination of electric heating, heat pump technology and fuel-burning heaters with alternative fuels (e.g. HVO) enables components to be coordinated and used intelligently and efficiently depending on the ambient temperature and available energy.
The conference with trade fair provided an optimum opportunity to discuss topics related to electromobility in buses with transport undertakings, industry and politics, and to return home with new insights and ideas.
